Ferrari F8 Spider
THE EVOLUTIONS OF A SPECIES
As in traditional Ferrari fashion, the F8 Spider was designed with the goal of outperforming its predecessor. This was quite a challenge considering the greatness of the 488 Spider, but after implementing technical advancements from Ferrari's racing experience the legendary 488 Pista, Ferrari engineers managed to squeeze an additional 50 cv from the award-winning twin-turbo V8 engine and cut 20 kg from the entire vehicle. Mate these performance advancements with a retractable hardtop that takes just 14 seconds to deploy and the F8 Spider sets a new benchmark for the open-air sports car in terms of usable performance and exceptional handling, whilst providing an incredibly rewarding driving experience.
INQUIREA Closer Look Into the F8 Spider
While every element within the F8 Spider's interior has been redesigned it still retains the classic, driver-oriented cockpit typical of Ferrari's mid-rear-engined sports cars. Notable interior refinements include a new dash, door panels, sport seats, tunnel and steering wheel. The dash incorporates an aluminium sail panel supporting the central satellite and continuing into the dash itself. In addition, a sliver of carbon-fibre has been fitted to divide the upper and lower parts of the dash. This section also incorporates the 7” touchscreen passenger-side (optional). The dash is then completed by the classic instrument cluster with its central rev-counter. The tunnel features a new bridge that seems to float, providing for a streamlin and airy cabin. As with F1 racing cars the new generation steering wheel contains most of the vital controls mounted easily within the drives reach. The result is symbiotic relationship between driver and car.
To achieve the open air cockpit while retaining the comfort of a coupe, Ferrari engineers relied on their ingenious RHT (Retractable Hard Top) design. The design of the F8 Spider was crafted around this RHT by shifting the separation line from its conventional position at the belt-line to above the B-pillar. This allowed for a much more compact top that is divides into two parts and is stowed on top of the front part of the engine. The RHT takes just 14 seconds to deploy or retract and can be closed or opened while the car is moving.
The F8 Spider is propelled by Ferrari's 3.9-litre twin-turbo V8, wich was named "Best Engine of the Year" for a record setting fourth consecutive year. Although, the overall performance levels of this power plant are significantly higher than those of the 488 Spider thanks to a slew of refinements and performance optimizing components. As a result, it delivers 720 CV at 8,000 rpm, an impressive 50 CV more than the 488 Spider, giving this V8 engine “best in class” status in its segment. In addition to this increase in power the F8 Spider benefits from a weight reduction and improved aerodynamic coefficient. When paired with the vehicle dynamics systems, that performance is now accessible to a larger number of drivers making for an easier and more confident experience when driving on the limit.
